Emily Filinska is a graduate student pursuing her Master's in Social and Ecological Sustainability at the University of Waterloo, Canada. With the support of her supervisor, Prof. Prateep Kumar Nayak, her research involves analyzing cetacean (dolphins, whales, and porpoises) interactions with fishers and how these interactions impact the sustainability of SSF. Her research involves analyzing cetacean bycatch from a social-ecological systems perspective, particularly adapting current bycatch policies. Emily is also a member of the editorial team for the V2V Commons, the official newsletter for the V2V Global Partnership. She completed her Bachelor’s of Environmental Science (Co-op) - Majoring in Ecology at the University of Guelph. Throughout her undergrad, she has worked for many organizations, both non-profit and governmental. This has helped her understand the importance of transdisciplinary cooperation. Her main drive in life has been to make a positive change on this planet, following her passion for cetacean conservation.
