Maarten J. Bavinck

Currently, Maarten is a professor at the University of Amsterdam. He is leading a project with the acronym REINCORPFISH, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO/WOTRO: its full title is 'Reincorporating the excluded: Providing space for small-scale fishers in the sustainable development of fisheries of South Africa and South Asia'. Maarten Bavinck got his master’s degree in development sociology/social anthropology at the Free University of Amsterdam and completed his Ph.D. in human geography on the conflicts occurring in the fisheries of the Coromandel Coast, in South India at the University of Amsterdam. His other roles include being the director at the Centre for Maritime Research (MARE), and regional coordinator for the Too Big to Ignore project for Europe. He was also the co-editor of the MARE Publication Series from 2003 to the present as well as being a member of Oikos from 2008 till the present.
