Ryoichi Kato is a Master's student at the School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University, Japan. He is pursuing his graduate degree under the supervision of Prof. Yinji Li. His research focuses on aligning FAO SSF Guidelines with Japanese fisheries governance. In the light of recent issues and concerns emerging from the Blue Economy/Blue Growth initiatives, there is a strong need to update and clarify some important aspects in the FAO-SSF Guidelines to better ensure the sustainability of SSF. The guidelines are not yet well implemented in Japan, a country known as a fisheries and oceans nation. His research works to clarify the true situation of Japanese fisheries governance from the lens of SSF guidelines and analyze challenges and future perspectives. He believes his research will contribute significantly to Japanese small-scale fisheries transitioning from Vulnerability To Viability (V2V).
